How to Stitch a Video on TikTok

If you’re not on Tiktok, I’m pretty sure you’ve at least heard of it.

If not, it’s time to get out from under your rock! Tiktok is basically a cool app where people make funny, ironic, serious, and otherwise unique videos. They can be spoken videos, dances, or set to music and spoken over. I highly recommend falling down that rabbit hole if you want to be entertained.

Tiktok has a variety of features where you can organically reach strangers and duet or stitch their videos. These are probably worlds you know but don’t know how they relate to Tiktok right? Have no fear, Clarity is here!

Today we will teach you how to stitch a video on Tiktok.

What Is a “Stitch”?

Stitching a video means that you take a short clip of another person’s video, then make your own video that follows their clip.

From your profile dashboard, find the video you’d like to stitch (make sure you’ve “liked” the video for easier access). Click the video and find what portion you’d like to communicate with.

Take our example using the user @beautyschoolblue. In the video, she says, “Tell me something a job has taught you that you will never forget.” This is a great one for any business owner to stitch with, because you can share valuable information that your clients wouldn’t even know to ask.

How to Stitch on TikTok

Navigate to the right-pointing arrow located on the right side of your screen. Sometimes this area shows three dots but they function the same way.

Tap the arrow and another screen will pop up. Look towards the bottom of your screen. You’ll see “Report,” “Save Video,” “Duet,” and “Stitch.” Click “Stitch.”

When you tap Stitch, a bar with red borders should appear at the bottom of your screen. You’ll also notice a white bar separate from the red border. The border can be dragged to find the clip that you want to interact with. Using this red border, you can shorten the clip or move to later in the original video.

The white bar shows you where you are in the video. You can use up to five seconds of the original video or make it shorter. Tap the screen to play to double check that you like the portion of the video you’ve chosen. When you’re happy with your clip, click “Next.”

The next screen is where you record your portion of the video.

You can choose different lengths but we always say to choose the longest length possible, because Tiktok videos can be shortened, but never lengthened.

To record, tap the big red button in the bottom center of the screen. Tap again to pause, or hold the button down to record and lift your finger up to pause. To zoom in and out, hold the red button and move your thumb up and down.

Once you’re finished recording your portion, click the check mark in the bottom right corner. If you’re happy with your video, you can click Next.

Next is the screen where you can add effects, text, stickers, and voiceovers. These features can make your video pop, but are not necessary. Click Next once you’re finished there.

The next screen that pops up is the final step. You’ll add applicable text describing your video and include any hashtags.

Make sure your video is set to public (for views) and that people can comment on it (for interaction). Click “Post” and your video will post shortly.

Congratulations on your first stitch! May the algorithm be ever in your favor.
